With its new next-gen PS5 console, Sony has focused entirely on speed. In addition to an ultra-fast SSD and a graphics card with ray tracing support, the PlayStation 5 also offers support for the fast WiFi 6 standard for the first time.
WiFi 6 standard
So if you want to optimally integrate your new console into your home network directly on the launch day, you should check whether the router or WLAN access point used so far can already handle the new WiFi 6 standard. This is the only way to use the full potential of the new generation of consoles with an Internet connection via WLAN.
What are the advantages of WiFi 6?
Behind the name WiFi 6 hides the new WLAN standard 802.11ax. As soon as a WiFi 6 router communicates with a WiFi 6 device (like the PS5), speeds of 4,800 Mbit/s and more can be achieved. For comparison: WiFi 5 (802.11ac) can connect devices with a maximum of 1,733 Mbit/s. By the way, the buyers of the new Microsoft XBOX console are limited to WiFi 5. Sony, on the other hand, relies on maximum speed for the PlayStation 5 when it comes to network connections.
Fun fact: the Sony PS4 can only support WiFi 4.
WiFi 6 doesn’t just bring better peak performance for console gamers, however. A new transmission method called ODFMA (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access) results in higher data rates, especially in practice, at greater distances or when there are sources of interference and obstacles.
Thanks to MU-MIMO technology, WiFi 6 is also able to supply multiple clients with data in parallel. This means that the new WLAN is clearly superior, especially if many devices in your household quickly exchange data or want to access a common resource such as the Internet. And don’t be afraid: Even if the Sony PS5 may be your first WiFi 6 device, all older WiFi devices can still be used as normal.

PS5: It all depends on the router
So that the PS5 can really live out its high WiFi 6 speed with 2 × 2 MIMO, it naturally needs a suitable router as an opponent. The network and gaming expert Asus has two suitable devices on offer. The Asus RT-AX86U router should be the perfect partner for the new gaming console. With a total WLAN bandwidth of up to 5,700 Mbit/s, this model quickly connects all WLAN clients. The 2.4 GHz band for older WLAN devices accounts for 861 Mbit/s. In the modern 5 GHz band, the RT-AX86U has a capacity of up to 4,804 Mbit/s and thus ensures fast data exchange also with the PS5.
In addition, the gaming router from ASUS comes with a 2.5 Gbit/s Ethernet port to connect wired clients extremely quickly. But that’s not all: If necessary, two independent 1 Gbit/s Internet connections can also be aggregated. This then gives you a theoretical Internet bandwidth of up to 2 Gbit/s. Individual services such as video streaming or games can also be preferred via the Quality of Service function (QoS). A feature that can secure you the next high score while playing online on the PlayStation 5.
WiFi 6 with RGB lighting
The slightly cheaper Asus RT-AX82U model also offers dual-band WiFi with WiFi 6 support. The maximum combined speed is 5,400 Mbit/s. This value is made up of 574 Mbit/s in the 2.4 GHz band and also 4804 Mbit/s in 5 GHz operation. This means that a high WiFi speed is also available for the PS5 in combination with the RT-AX82U.
The second Asus router has been specially designed for gamers. With its integrated RGB lighting, the router itself becomes an eye-catcher. The LED can be controlled dynamically and adjusted according to your needs. Both router models also have a dedicated gaming Ethernet port. In addition, the compatible Asus router app can be used to activate mobile gaming mode at the touch of a button. This should minimize lags and lower the latency in order to give you the best online gaming experience on the PS5.
By the way: Do you have a large area in your apartment or house to cover with a fast WiFi 6 network? Another reason for an Asus PS5 compatible router. The manufacturer implements its Asus AiMesh technology in both models, which uses several routers to provide a seamless, high-speed WiFi network with automatic network switching between the WiFi routers. The larger Asus RT-AX86U model currently costs just under 245 euros. For the smaller Asus RT-AX82U variant, just under 173 euros.
